My friend Alex Hagan is fun and quirky and brilliant. I wish we lived closer together. And today, I would rather you read what he’s writing than what I’m writing. Here are a few nuggets from a recent post of his:
“A scenario isn’t a prediction, but rather a plausible piece of fiction…[and] even a plausible fiction about the future can profoundly shape your choices right here and right now.”
“Scenarios exist to stretch our thinking, not settle it.”
“The future is not a place we’re heading to, it’s something we’re building as we go.”
“The future rewards those who show up curious.”
If you know my work at all, you may already have a sense of why I love Alex. (My crush also has to do with video games, Easter eggs, Sudokus and Barbie doll trophies — but those are stories for another day). He and I both understand the power of imagination in shaping what happens to us. As his tagline reads, he’ll help you “build a future that doesn’t just happen to you, but because of you.”
I am becoming increasingly convinced that painting a more vivid picture of the future we want to create, in the context of appreciating that we have a finite number of turns left in this game of life, makes us far more likely to experience that future as we pursue it with passion. Especially if we do it with others. (I think my next batch of stickers might read “Imagination is a team sport.” So is curiosity, by the way…)
If your future feels murky right now, personally or organizationally, reach out. I’d love to keep you company as you not only find clarity, but create it.
