Safe to Change

I’ve been reminded in multiple ways recently that stress can stand in the way of our ability and willingness to adapt, both personally and organizationally.

When our nervous system is on high alert, our tendency is to self-protect. In that state, it’s very hard for us to be curious, to listen well, or to stay open to new experiences. We can easily get stuck in unhelpful patterns simply because we are so overwhelmed by demands and ongoing volatility that we can’t bear to introduce change in yet another area of our life — even if that change is positive and wanted.

Memories Fuel Imagination

Our imagination is fed by our memory.

Seems counterintuitive, doesn’t it. Our imagination pulls us toward a new future, but it’s anchored in our past.

It’s very hard for us to imagine something of which we have never seen any of the component parts. We can put them together in novel ways, but if we are working from a limited library of images in the first place, our ability to be creative is stifled.

Upping our Game Together

As I write this piece, I am grateful to be in Madrid, at the start of our annual face-to-face Board meeting for the International Association of Facilitators.

When we talk to our members, the three things they identify as seeking from this Association are professional credibility, professional community and satisfying their professional curiosity. These align with what I too appreciate from being involved.
