Created not Discovered

I have just wrapped up a magical week in Morocco.

We learned so much from our guide, Ismail — to the point that we started keeping a list of memorable moments and new insights.

One of mine: “An oasis in the desert is created more often than it is discovered.”

My previous image of an oasis was that it just appears, like a mirage on the horizon that might prove to be real as you get closer. But as it turns out…not necessarily. Often, an oasis is created in the first place by water being diverted to a selected location where people choose to settle and grow crops.

When you’re a thirsty traveller in the desert, an oasis is an incredibly welcome sight. But it’s cast in a whole new light when we consider creating it rather than hunting for it.

You can trade the stress of wondering if you’ll happen upon it for the adventure of imagining then building it.

What might your created oasis be right now?

Mine was family time in Morocco.

One possibility: plan now to join me in Costa Rica next February. You’ll have the triple pleasure of the anticipation now, the pride of knowing you invested in yourself, and the enjoyment when the time comes. An oasis you create.
