“I want to dance more.”
One of the activities we enjoyed during the “Reimagine your Story” retreat I ran in southern France last week was to write down 100 things you want.
Here are a few things we learned:
- It’s an easy assignment for some people and very challenging for others.
- Some people feel the need to seek permission (from whom??!) even to articulate their wants. It can feel self-centred. It can help to remember that our desires are very personal and often point us in the direction of our purpose.
- Quality comes from quantity. Writing 100 things matters — writing down “a lot” may not be enough! You won’t likely pursue all of them, but there will be some that jump off the page at you.
- It’s an energizing task. I loved watching people light up as they read parts of their list out loud.
- Be specific. Your wants should be clear enough that you know what the first step to achieving them would be. You can enlist curious friends to help with this — they can ask you “narrowing in” questions.
“I want to dance more” leads to what kind(s) of dance? Lessons or free form? To what kind of music? Who are you with? How often?
Can you see how a more vivid picture emerges?
Those of us who spent time together in Provence are looking forward to receiving the pictures of the line dancing, salsa and two-step that might just be happening as a result of that conversation!
What would be on your 100 wants list? How easily can you generate it? Which one is practically leaping off the page at you?
PS — This can be an organizational activity too. Try it with your team and tell me how it goes!
