Get the Imaging

When we visit a doctor, often the first step in diagnosing an issue is to get the imaging. Xray, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI — whatever they need to get reliable visibility on what is going on. Makes sense.

Our leadership is no different. Today’s tip to lead well in uncertainty is to “get the imaging.” You need reliable visibility of what is actually happening inside your organization.

Sounds basic. But I have two specific reasons why getting accurate data is particularly relevant now.

  1. We are getting better at measuring things that weren’t easily measurable before. What tools are easiest for your team to use as they adapt? How much is change uncertainty dampening their performance? How ready are they to reskill? How do they prefer to innovate? These are nuanced, helpful insights that can now be assessed, visualized and tracked.
  2. We make assumptions that are often not borne out by the data — and it’s worse the higher up the food chain one travels. One dominant storyline? “People don’t like change.” Not true — some do! And it’s possible to discern which people those are. You can then invite them to lean into becoming change champions inside your organization.

In uncertain times, it’s especially important to make decisions that are based on evidence. The adaptability of our teams is measurable and can be made visible to help fuel wiser decisions.

If you’re curious about how to do this, I’d love to hear from you. It’s quick, and the ROI is high.
