Last week, I wrote about one reason not everyone in your organization will be able to see themselves clearly in your strategy. Today, we’ll explore a second reason.
Sometimes, in an effort to make a strategic plan thorough and inclusive, we see it as an inventory of everything we currently do.
A strategy is not an inventory—it’s a filter.
And sometimes the holes in that filter let too many things through (am I the only one that’s poured quinoa down the sink because I used the wrong sieve??)
Good strategy helps us make decisions, including saying no to some opportunities. If your emerging strategy is missing some of your current activities, maybe it’s time to say no to those too.
