If you are in the process of reimagining your next chapter, as an organization or individually, then my encouragement for you today is this: put yourself in situations where flashes of insight are likely to hit you.
This advice is not “try to get hit by lightning.” And it is more than “be prepared” or “do your homework.” It’s more like “hang out where fresh perspectives live in high density.”
Organizationally, this might mean attending events where interesting people congregate and big ideas are being discussed — or convening that kind of event yourself. It might mean setting aside time in your Board meetings for generative conversations. Or spending time at the front lines, delivering directly on your mission. Or helping your team enjoy a change of scenery to change everyone’s dynamic.
Personally, the strategies aren’t that different. What events could you attend that are likely to inspire creative thinking? Who are the people who will push you into more meaningful conversations? How can you get out of your head and get your hands a bit dirtier? Where could you go that would give you fresh air and a fresh line of sight to a future you haven’t even considered? (If you’re up for an adventure, you could even join me in Costa Rica!)
Flashes of insight are less random than you might think. (If you need convincing, check out The Power of Moments or The Geography of Genius). Put yourself right in their way.
